Biography

Jana Lucie Bojanowski (born 2010) is one of the most promising young German cellists of her generation. She began her musical education at the age of four at the Badisches Konservatorium Karlsruhe with Andreas Köhler. Since December 2019, she has been studying with Professor Ivan Monighetti in Basel. From April 2026, she will also attend the PreCollege program at the Karlsruhe University of Music in the class of Professor Tatjana Vassiljeva, where she will begin her Bachelor's degree in the winter semester of 2026/27. Furthermore, she was accepted as a master student of Sol Gabetta at the Basel Academy of Music starting in the winter semester of 2026/27.

In addition to her remarkable musical achievements, Jana has demonstrated exceptional academic dedication. She attended the music-specialized branch of Helmholtz-Gymnasium Karlsruhe and successfully completed her Abitur (German university entrance qualification) at the age of just 15.

Her artistic development has been marked by numerous competition successes. Between 2016 and 2025, Jana won first prizes at the regional, state, and national levels of the prestigious Jugend musiziert competition, most recently in June 2025 in the categories Violoncello Solo and Piano Trio. Internationally, she has also received first prizes, including at the Barcelona International Young Artist Competition (BIYAC) in 2024, the String Competition Online, the International Artists Competition, and the Royal Maas Competition in 2023.

In February 2026, Jana was awarded a fine instrument from the German Musical Instrument Fund (Deutscher Musikinstrumentenfonds) at the 33rd competition of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.

Jana has received important artistic inspiration through masterclasses with some of the world's leading cellists and professors. In July 2019, she became the youngest participant ever admitted to Professor Wolfgang Boettcher's masterclass at the Carl Flesch Academy in Baden-Baden. She has also studied with distinguished musicians including Professor Wen-Sinn Yang, Professor David Geringas, Professor Tatjana Vassiljeva, and Professor Jens-Peter Maintz. In August 2025, she attended the renowned Festival Ravel in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, where she worked with Sol Gabetta and Professor Ivan Monighetti.

As both a soloist and chamber musician, Jana has already performed throughout many European countries. One of the highlights of her artistic career was a joint performance with renowned cellist Professor Jean-Guihen Queyras at the Festival Ravel.

As a soloist, she has appeared with several orchestras, including the South Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestra (Budweis), the Orchestra of the Reial Cercle Artístic Barcelona, the Geringas Chamber Orchestra, and the Bodensee Philharmonie Konstanz.

Jana's artistic development is supported by several prestigious institutions. Following scholarships from the Badisches Konservatorium Karlsruhe and the Riemschneider Foundation, she has been a scholarship holder of the Musikakademie Liechtenstein since September 2022, where she regularly participates in intensive study weeks. Since September 2025, she has also been a scholarship recipient of the Art & Strings Foundation and the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben from which she also receives support through a sponsorship. In July 2026, she was awarded the Irene Schulte-Hillen Prize by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.

Jana performs on a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume cello, made in Paris in 1845, generously loaned to her by the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.
